50ft open-air film screenings

Friday 4 August 9pm, by Serpentine Lake

50-foot open-air Film Screening: Performance, Nicolas Roeg and Donald Cammell. GB, 1970, 195mins

Perhaps the greatest London film, effortlessly interweaving the bohemian and gangland subculture of a city in constant flux, Roeg and Cammell’s hallucinatory exploration of minds and morals unravelling in the hothouse decadence of the sixties underground is an iconic document of British pop culture. A dark crystal of a movie, a hall of mirrors that catches Mick Jagger and James Fox in its luminous reflections on self and soul. A work of vast ambition, it’s intense, it’s inspirational, it’s essential.

Pre-Film short: RabbitRun Wrake. UK, 2005, 9mins

A multi-award winning short animation, this dark and dreamlike tale of lost innocence and the random justice of nature is told with curious images from a distant childhood.

50-foot open-air Film Screening: Blue Velvet, David Lynch. USA, 1986, 120mins

A David Lynch classic featuring Laura Dern and Isabella Rossellini. Put an ear to the ground and you can hear it. It's delirious, intense, it's darkness and light, it's the mystery you don't want solved; it's a tender heart, the shadow side of obsession, it's beyond the picket fence and it knows how far it needs to go. It goes further. It's part of you already, but never at this scale.

Pre-Film short: Who Killed Brown Owl, Desperate Optimists. UK, 2004, 9mins
