Centrally located, the Serpentine is one of Britain's best-loved galleries, set in the unique location of Kensington Gardens. A vibrant changing Exhibition Programme is presented in four large, beautifully proportioned rooms, including the high-domed space in the central gallery. In the evening, the stylish exterior lighting of this Neo Classical Grade II listed building creates a dramatic entrance for approaching guests.
The Serpentine Gallery, built in 1934 as a tea pavilion, has an international reputation for excellence, presenting pioneering exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Every summer, the Serpentine commissions international architects of worldwide acclaim to design a temporary Pavilion for the Serpentine’s lawn.
The Gallery became an independent charity in 1987 and is now run by a Board of Trustees, chaired by Lord Palumbo. In 1998, under the patronage of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Gallery completed a £4 million renovation. The Serpentine raises £2.8 million a year through sponsorship, gallery hire, trusts and foundations, individual donations, fundraising events and other income generating activities. This income ensures that the Serpentine Gallery continues to present ground breaking Exhibition, Architecture and Education Programmes free of charge.
The Serpentine Gallery is available for a range of events, from champagne breakfasts to cocktail receptions and elegant dinners. On rare occasions exclusive daytime events can take place when the gallery is between exhibitions. Please note, the Serpentine Gallery is not available for weddings or 21st birthday parties.
