Wael Shawky
Spring 2011

Alexandria-based artist Wael Shawky will be in residence at the Centre for Possible Studies where he will be making films and other works. His residency at the Edgware Road Project will be undertaken in two parts: the first will be in April 2011 and in Summer 2011. His residency is presented in collaboration with the Townhouse Gallery, Cairo, and the Delfina Foundation, London.

Wael Shawky lives and works in Alexandria, Egypt. Last year he launched MASS Alexandria, the first Independent Studio Programme for young artists in the city. Shawky has received international acclaim for his work as an artist and filmmaker and has had numerous international solo shows including: Citta Dell'Arte, Italy (2010), Gentili Apri, Berlin (2009), Kunsthalle Winterthur, Switzerland (2007), and Ludwigsburg Kunstverein, Germany (2005). His work has also been shown at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and 2005. In February 2011, he was awarded the Ernst Schering Foundation Art Award.

His works include Télématch Sadat, a presentation of the events surrounding the assassination of Sadat in 1981 re-enacted by children and Al-Aqsa Park, an animated film installation in which the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is displayed as a fairground carousel. Winner of the Ernst Schering Foundation Art Award 2011.His work has been exhibited all over the world including the Queens Museum of Art, New York; the Riwaq Biennale, Palestine; the Moscow Biennial, and Ashkal Alwan, Beirut. His residency is undertaken in collaboration with Townhouse Gallery, Cairo and the Delfina Foundation, London.
