Maria Lassnig is best known for her bold and visceral oil paintings, but drawing is also important as a medium in its own right and central to her daily practice. Lassnig coined the phrase ‘body-awareness’ to describe how she depicts the invisible aspects of inner physical sensations. She frequently uses her own image as a means of exploring and representing the human experience and this Limited Edition Print is based on one of her many self-portraits.
Lassnig (b.1919) has been producing work over a period of 60 years in Vienna, Paris and New York. She represented Austria in the 39th Venice Biennale in 1980 and participated in Documenta 7 in 1982 and Documenta X in 1997. She has had numerous solo exhibitions, including: Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1994; Musée national d’Art modern, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, 1995; Museum moderner Kunst, Vienna, 1999; and Kunsthaus, Zurich, 2003, as well as many commercial gallery exhibitions. Her work was recently featured in the major American touring survey Wack! Art and the Feminist Revolution organised by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 2007 and will be included in the 55th Carnegie International, Pittsburgh, 2008.
