Oscar Niemeyer (born Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1907) is one of the world’s greatest living architects. Throughout the 1950s he designed ground-breaking public and corporate buildings in Brazil. Among many international honours, he was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1988.

Niemeyer was commissioned to design the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2003, his first UK project. These prints are based on his simple sketches for the project. The original captions by Oscar Niemeyer, translated into English, read:

How to find, in such a simple building, the characteristics of lightness and architectural surprise that I prefer?

1 – Firstly, by suspending the construction above the ground 1.5 metres would be sufficient for the desired effect

2 – Secondly, by giving a use to the lower space

3 – Thirdly, by creating a silhouette that distinguishes it from any other building
