Creative Generations
2004

The Serpentine Gallery identified a need for increased participation in the Gallery’s Exhibition, Architecture and Education Programmes by older people. Creative Generations enabled this target group to benefit from these programmes in a structured and sustainable way through the development of long-term partnerships with local residential and day-care units. The project created a platform for both care-providers and older people to develop best practice for participation in the arts and offered older people opportunities to increase their involvement in the wider community.

Artists Sarah Cole, Andrew Fisher and Francis Kearney led Gallery visits with seven care centres in the borough of Westminster. In addition, each artist worked closely with participants from one of the centres on a project, which culminated in an exhibition in The Sackler Centre of Arts Education at the Serpentine Gallery.

“Creative Generations has inspired my department to think about how they could work across Westminster services and users to create joint projects in the future. I’m keen to use the project as a model of good practice and work with the Serpentine Gallery to build upon these relationships.”
Kevin Williamson, Head of Housing with Care Services, Westminster City Council
